“The man who is the governor of the land spoke to us in a mean way. He treated us as if we were spying on the land.

As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them. But he pretended to be a stranger. He spoke to them in a mean way. “Where do you come from?” he asked. “From the land of Canaan,” they replied. “We’ve come to buy food.”

Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam. That’s because the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.”

Instead, he followed the advice of the young men. He said, “My father put a heavy load on your shoulders. But I’ll make it even heavier. My father beat you with whips. But I’ll beat you with bigger whips.”

But Rehoboam didn’t accept the advice the elders gave him. He asked for advice from the young men who had grown up with him and were now serving him.

Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my sight! Make sure you don’t come to see me again! If you do, you will die.”

A gentle answer turns anger away. But mean words stir up anger.

Poor people beg for mercy. But rich people answer in a mean way.

My son, if you stop listening to what I teach you, you will wander away from the words of knowledge.
