From year to year he traveled from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah. He served Israel as judge in all those places.

He named that place Bethel. But the city used to be called Luz.

Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz. Luz is also called Bethel. It’s in the land of Canaan.

You say, “I choose the appointed time to judge people. And I judge them fairly.

“Listen to me, you priests! Pay attention, people of Israel! Listen, you members of the royal family! Here is my decision against you. You have been like a trap at Mizpah. You have been like a net spread out on Mount Tabor.

Do not look to Bethel. Do not go to Gilgal. Do not travel to Beersheba. The people of Gilgal will be taken away as prisoners. Nothing will be left of Bethel.”

The Israelites celebrated the Passover Feast. They observed it on the evening of the 14th day of the month. They did it while they were camped at Gilgal on the plains around Jericho.

Then the Lord spoke to Joshua. He said, “Today I have taken away from you the shame of being slaves in Egypt.” That’s why the place where the men were circumcised has been called Gilgal to this very day.

He had 30 sons. They rode on 30 donkeys. His sons controlled 30 towns in Gilead. Those towns are called Havvoth Jair to this day.

He had 40 sons and 30 grandsons. They rode on 70 donkeys. Abdon led Israel for eight years.

“Some of you ride on white donkeys. Some of you sit on your saddle blankets. Some of you walk along the road. Think about

Samuel sent a message to the Israelites. He told them to meet with the Lord at Mizpah.

Then Samuel said to the people, “Come on. Let’s go to Gilgal. There we’ll agree again to have Saul as our king.”

Then Samuel said, “Gather all the Israelites together at Mizpah. I will pray to the Lord for you.”
