So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and got the ark of the Lord. They brought it up to Abinadab’s house on the hill. They set his son Eleazar apart to guard the ark.

Let’s bring the ark of our God back here to us. We didn’t use it to ask God for advice during the whole time Saul was king.”

Here are the words we heard in Ephrathah. We heard them again in the fields of Kiriath Jearim.

You who carry the objects that belong to the Lord’s temple, leave Babylon! Leave it! Get out of there! Don’t touch anything that isn’t pure and “clean.” Come out of Babylon and be pure.

From the hill that faces Beth Horon on the south the border turned south. Then the border went along the west side of the hill. It came to an end at Kiriath Jearim. That town belongs to the people of Judah. That was the border on the west.

So the Israelites started out to go to the cities of those people. On the third day they came to Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.

Then messengers were sent to the people of Kiriath Jearim. The messengers said, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your town.”

The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim for a long time. It was there for a full 20 years. Then all the Israelites turned back to the Lord.
