Again the Lord called out, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli. He said, “Here I am. You called out to me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I didn’t call you. Go back and lie down.”

Joseph looked around. Then he saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son. He asked, “Is this your youngest brother? Is he the one you told me about?” He continued, “May God be gracious to you, my son.”

Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, spoke again to Joab. He said, “I don’t care what happens to me. Please let me run behind the man from Cush.” But Joab replied, “My son, why do you want to go? You don’t have any news that will bring you a reward.”

Some men brought to him a man who could not walk. He was lying on a mat. Jesus saw that they had faith. So he said to the man, “Don’t lose hope, son. Your sins are forgiven.”

He ran over to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called out to me.” But Eli said, “I didn’t call you. Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

Samuel didn’t know the Lord yet. That’s because the Lord still hadn’t given him a message.

The man told Eli, “I’ve just come from the front lines of the battle. I just ran away from there today.” Eli asked, “What happened, son?”
