I told Eli I would punish his family forever. He knew his sons were sinning. He knew they were saying bad things about me. In spite of that, he did not stop them.

His father had never tried to stop him from doing what he wanted to. His father had never asked him, “Why are you acting the way you do?” Adonijah was also very handsome. Now that Absalom was dead, Adonijah was David’s oldest son.

The king continued, “You know all the wrong things you did to my father David. In your heart you know them. Now the Lord will pay you back for what you did.

Our God, won’t you please judge them? We don’t have the power to face this huge army that’s attacking us. We don’t know what to do. But we’re looking to you to help us.”

Train your children, because then there is hope. Don’t do anything to bring about their deaths.

If a child is corrected, they become wise. But a child who is not corrected brings shame to their mother.

Many times you yourself have cursed others. Deep down inside, you know that’s true.

“So I will judge you Israelites. I will judge each of you in keeping with what you have done,” announces the Lord and King. “Turn away from your sins! Turn away from all the evil things you have done. Then sin will not bring you down.

The end has now come for you. I will pour out my anger on you. I will judge you based on how you have lived. I will pay you back for all your evil practices. I hate them.

The Lord says, “Stir up the nations into action! Let them march into the valley where I will judge them. I will take my seat in court. I will judge all the surrounding nations.

“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. Anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Someone might show that they don’t respect the judge. Or they will show that they don’t respect the priest. The priest will serve the Lord your God at the place God will choose. If anyone doesn’t show respect for these people, that person must be put to death. Remove that evil person from Israel.

Suppose someone has a very stubborn son. He doesn’t obey his father and mother. And he won’t listen to them when they try to correct him.

If our hearts judge us, we know that God is greater than our hearts. And he knows everything.

Eli’s sons were good for nothing. They didn’t honor the Lord.

That sin of Eli’s sons was very great in the Lord’s sight. That’s because they were not treating his offering with respect.
