David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph. There he learned that Saul had come out to kill him.

They brought the head of Ish-Bosheth to King David at Hebron. They said to him, “Here’s the head of Ish-Bosheth, the son of Saul. Saul was your enemy. He often tried to kill you. Today the Lord has paid back Saul and his family. He has let you get even with them. You are our king and master.”

The one who looked like a man touched me again. He gave me strength.

The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains. They lived in caves. They lived in holes in the ground.

Sometimes David stayed in places of safety in the desert. At other times he stayed in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul looked for him. But God didn’t hand David over to him.

Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh. He told David that God would make him strong.

But David’s men said to him, “We’re afraid here in Judah. Suppose we go to Keilah and fight against the Philistine army. Then we’ll be even more afraid.”

Saul set up his camp beside the road. It was on the hill of Hakilah facing Jeshimon. But David stayed in the desert. He saw that Saul had followed him there.
