Make all your promises in my name. When you promise say, ‘You can be sure that the Lord is alive.’ Be truthful, fair and honest when you make these promises. Then the nations will ask for blessings from me. And they will boast about me.”

Your lives will always be in danger. You will be filled with fear night and day. You will never be sure you are safe.

Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve. When you make promises, do so in his name.

People promise things by someone greater than themselves. Giving your word makes a promise certain. It puts an end to all arguing.

Hannah said to Eli, “Pardon me, sir. I’m the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. And that’s just as sure as you are alive.

Saul had been watching David as he went out to meet the Philistine. He spoke to Abner, the commander of the army. Saul said to him, “Abner, whose son is that young man?” Abner replied, “Your Majesty, I don’t know. And that’s just as sure as you are alive.”

“That will never happen!” Jonathan replied. “You aren’t going to die! My father doesn’t do anything at all without letting me know. So why would he hide this from me? He isn’t going to kill you!”

Jonathan said to David, “I’ll do anything you want me to do for you.”

Sir, the Lord has kept you from killing Nabal and his men. He has kept you from using your own hands to get even. So may what’s about to happen to Nabal happen to all your enemies. May it happen to everyone who wants to harm you. And may it happen just as surely as the Lord your God and you are alive.

David thought, “Some day Saul will destroy me. So the best thing I can do is escape. I’ll go to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop looking for me everywhere in Israel. His hand won’t be able to reach me.”
