The king passed by. Then the prophet called out to him. He said, “I went into the middle of the battle. Someone came to me with a prisoner. He said, ‘Guard this man. Don’t let him get away. If he does, you will pay for his life with yours. Or you can pay 75 pounds of silver.’

While I was busy here and there, the man disappeared.” The king of Israel spoke to him. He told him, “What you’ve just said is what will happen to you.”

He told the king, “The Lord says, ‘You have set a man free. But I had said he should be set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. So you must pay for his life with yours. You must pay for his people’s lives with the lives of your people.’ ”

So they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Jehu had stationed 80 men outside. He warned them, “I’m placing some men in your hands. Don’t let a single one of them escape. If you do, you will pay for his life with yours.”

Be careful that no one tempts you with riches. Don’t take money from people who want special favors, no matter how much it is.

No one can pay for the life of anyone else. No one can give God what that would cost.

But suppose payment is required of him instead. Then the owner can save his life by paying what is required.

A person’s riches might save their life. But a poor person is not able to do anything about danger.

He won’t accept any payment. He won’t take any money, no matter how much he is offered.

“May anyone who is lazy when they do the Lord’s work be under my curse! May anyone who keeps their sword from killing be under my curse!
