So they wore rough clothing. They tied ropes around their heads. Then they went to the king of Israel. They told him, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’ ” The king answered, “Is he still alive? He used to be my friend.”

The king of Israel replied, “What you say is true. You are my king and master. I belong to you. And everything I have belongs to you.”

“Your enemies bragged, ‘We will chase Israel and will catch them. We’ll divide up what we take from them. We’ll eat them alive. We’ll pull our swords out. Our powerful hands will destroy them.’
