Elijah went there and stood in front of the people. He said, “How long will it take you to make up your minds? If the Lord is the one and only God, worship him. But if Baal is the one and only God, worship him.” The people didn’t say anything.

Laban and Bethuel answered, “The Lord has done all of this. We can’t say anything to you one way or the other.

“What can we say to you?” Judah replied. “What can we say? How can we prove we haven’t done anything wrong? God has shown you that we are guilty. We are now your slaves. All of us are, including the one found to have the cup.”

So Ahab sent that message all through Israel. He gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel.

All the people saw it. Then they fell down flat with their faces toward the ground. They cried out, “The Lord is the one and only God! The Lord is the one and only God!”

They worshiped the Lord. But at the same time, they served the statues of their gods. And to this day their children and grandchildren continue to do what their people before them did.

You, Lord, are God! You have promised many good things to me.

Manasseh prayed to him. When he did, the Lord felt sorry for him. He answered his prayer. The Lord brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.

Know that the Lord is God. He made us, and we belong to him. We are his people. We are the sheep belonging to his flock.

I hate people who can’t make up their minds. But I love your law.

Their hearts are dishonest. So now they must pay for their sins. The Lord will tear down their altars. He’ll destroy their sacred stones.

I will destroy those who bow down on their roofs to worship all the stars. I will destroy those who make promises not only in my name but also in the name of Molek.

‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man couldn’t think of anything to say.

The Pharisees heard that the Sadducees weren’t able to answer Jesus. So the Pharisees got together.

“Teacher,” he asked, “which is the most important commandment in the Law?”

“No one can serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one of them and love the other. Or you will be faithful to one and dislike the other. You can’t serve God and money at the same time.

When morning came, he called for his disciples to come to him. He chose 12 of them and made them apostles. Here are their names.

What the law says, it says to those who are ruled by the law. Its purpose is to shut every mouth and make the whole world accountable to God.

The Lord showed you those things so that you might know he is God. There is no other God except him.

But suppose you don’t want to serve him. Then choose for yourselves right now whom you will serve. You can choose the gods your people served east of the Euphrates River. Or you can serve the gods of the Amorites. After all, you are living in their land. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

So Samuel spoke to all the Israelites. He said, “Do you really want to return to the Lord with all your hearts? If you do, get rid of your false gods. Get rid of your statues of female gods that are named Ashtoreth. Commit yourselves to the Lord. Serve him only. Then he will save you from the power of the Philistines.”
