“Go right away to Zarephath in the region of Sidon. Stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.”

She went to get the water. Then he called out to her, “Please bring me a piece of bread too.”

You will drink water from the brook. I have directed some ravens to supply you with food there.”

A message came to Elijah from the Lord. He said,

Elijah looked around. Near his head he saw some bread. It had been baked over hot coals. A jar of water was also there. So Elijah ate and drank. Then he lay down again.

Some Israelites were forced to leave their homes. They’ll come back to Canaan and possess it all the way to the town of Zarephath. Some people from Jerusalem were taken to the city of Sepharad. They’ll return and possess the towns of the Negev Desert.

But Elijah was not sent to any of those widows. Instead, he was sent to a widow in Zarephath near Sidon.

Treasure is kept in clay jars. In the same way, we have the treasure of the good news in these earthly bodies of ours. That shows that the mighty power of the good news comes from God. It doesn’t come from us.

The Lord said to Gideon, “I want to hand Midian over to you. But you have too many men for me to do that. Then Israel might brag, ‘My own strength has saved me.’

The Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. So take them down to the water. There I will reduce the number of them for you. If I say, ‘This one will go with you,’ he will go. But if I say, ‘That one will not go with you,’ he will not go.”
