They replied, “Serve them today. Give them what they are asking for. Then they’ll always serve you.”
The king answered the people in a mean way. He didn’t accept the advice the elders had given him.
But Rehoboam didn’t accept the advice the elders gave him. Instead, he asked for advice from the young men. They had grown up with him and were now serving him.
A gentle answer turns anger away. But mean words stir up anger.
Suppose a ruler gets very angry with you. If he does, don’t quit your job in the palace. Being calm can overcome what you have done against him.
So the Lord replied with kind and comforting words. He spoke them to the angel who talked with me.
