Brothers and sisters, what should we say then? When you come together, each of you brings something. You bring a hymn or a teaching or a message from God. You bring a message in another language or explain what was said in that language. Everything must be done to build up the church.

Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that I planned many times to visit you. But until now I have been kept from coming. My work has produced results among the other Gentiles. In the same way, I want to see results among you.

If your gift is serving, then serve. If it is teaching, then teach.

So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build up one another.

Each of us should please our neighbors. Let us do what is good for them in order to build them up.

So what should I do? I will pray with my spirit. But I will also pray with my understanding. I will sing with my spirit. But I will also sing with my understanding.

Anyone who speaks in a language they had not known before doesn’t speak to people. They speak only to God. In fact, no one understands them. What they say by the Spirit remains a mystery.

No more than two or three people should speak in another language. And they should speak one at a time. Then someone must explain what was said.

But everything should be done in a proper and orderly way.

All this time, have you been thinking that I’ve been speaking up for myself? No, I’ve been speaking with God as my witness. I’ve been speaking like a believer in Christ. Dear friends, everything I do is to help you become stronger.

That’s why I write these things before I come to you. Then when I do come, I won’t have to be hard on you when I use my authority. The Lord gave me the authority to build you up. He didn’t give it to me to tear you down.

He gave all these people so that they might prepare God’s people to serve. Then the body of Christ will be built up.

He makes the whole body grow and build itself up in love. Under the control of Christ, each part of the body does its work. It supports the other parts. In that way, the body is joined and held together.

Don’t let any evil talk come out of your mouths. Say only what will help to build others up and meet their needs. Then what you say will help those who listen.

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.

So encourage one another with the hope you have. Build each other up. In fact, that’s what you are doing.
