Jesse’s first son was Eliab. His second son was Abinadab. The third was Shimea.

Over Levi was Hashabiah, the son of Kemuel. Over Aaron was Zadok.

Over Zebulun was Ishmaiah, the son of Obadiah. Over Naphtali was Jerimoth, the son of Azriel.

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab. He thought, “This has to be the one the Lord wants me to anoint for him.”

Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul into battle. The oldest son was Eliab. The second was Abinadab. The third was Shammah.

“What have I done now?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?”
