David spoke to the whole community of Israel. He said, “Let’s send word to the rest of our people no matter how far away they live. They live in all the territories of Israel. Let’s also send word to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and on their grasslands. Let’s invite everyone to come and join us. Let’s do it if it seems good to you and if that’s what the Lord our God wants.

So that’s what the whole community agreed to do. It seemed right to them.

Remember when the anger of the Lord our God broke out against us? That’s because it wasn’t you Levites who tried to carry up the ark the first time. We didn’t ask the Lord how to do it in the way the law requires.”

Here are the words we heard in Ephrathah. We heard them again in the fields of Kiriath Jearim.

Saul said to Ahijah the priest, “Bring the ark of God.” At that time it was with the Israelites.

Saul said, “Let’s go down and chase after the Philistines tonight. Let’s not leave even one of them alive. Let’s take everything they have before morning.” “Do what you think is best,” they replied. But the priest said, “Let’s ask God for advice first.”

Ahimelek asked the Lord a question for David. He also gave him food and the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.”

Was that day the first time I asked God a question for him? Of course not! Please don’t bring charges against me. Please don’t bring charges against anyone in my family. I don’t know anything at all about this whole matter.”

So he asked the Lord for advice. He said, “Should I go and attack those Philistines?” The Lord answered him, “Go and attack them. Save Keilah.”
