The Lord works everything for its own ends – even the wicked for the day of disaster.

Does an ax exalt itself over the one who wields it, or a saw magnify itself over the one who cuts with it? As if a scepter should brandish the one who raises it, or a staff should lift up what is not made of wood!

One who argues with his creator is in grave danger, one who is like a mere shard among the other shards on the ground! The clay should not say to the potter, “What in the world are you doing? Your work lacks skill!”

Yet, Lord, you are our father. We are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the product of your labor.

This man, Jeconiah, will be like a broken pot someone threw away. He will be like a clay vessel that no one wants. Why will he and his children be forced into exile? Why will they be thrown out into a country they know nothing about?

Israel will be swallowed up among the nations; they will be like a worthless piece of pottery.

But the Lord said to him, “Go, because this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the people of Israel.

even before they were born or had done anything good or bad (so that God’s purpose in election would stand, not by works but by his calling) –

So then, God has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden.

But who indeed are you – a mere human being – to talk back to God? Does what is molded say to the molder, “Why have you made me like this?”
