What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! Certainly, I would not have known sin except through the law. For indeed I would not have known what it means to desire something belonging to someone else if the law had not said, “Do not covet.”

When the woman saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of his palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. Now this woman was very attractive.

I realize that everything has its limits, but your commands are beyond full comprehension. מ (Mem)

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

They confiscate the fields they desire, and seize the houses they want. They defraud people of their homes, and deprive people of the land they have inherited.

But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Then he said to them, “Watch out and guard yourself from all types of greed, because one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said, “May this never happen!”

I have desired no one’s silver or gold or clothing.

For the commandments, “Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not covet,” (and if there is any other commandment) are summed up in this, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is he? (I am speaking in human terms.)

What then shall we say that Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh, has discovered regarding this matter?

For the law brings wrath, because where there is no law there is no transgression either.

Now the law came in so that the transgression may increase, but where sin increased, grace multiplied all the more,

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not!

For sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it I died.

Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Absolutely not! But sin, so that it would be shown to be sin, produced death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

For when we were in the flesh, the sinful desires, aroused by the law, were active in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.

But sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of wrong desires. For apart from the law, sin is dead.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

But among you there must not be either sexual immorality, impurity of any kind, or greed, as these are not fitting for the saints.

You must not desire another man’s wife, nor should you crave his house, his field, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, or anything else he owns.”

So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion, evil desire, and greed which is idolatry.

not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God.

for the law made nothing perfect. On the other hand a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.

I saw among the goods we seized a nice robe from Babylon, two hundred silver pieces, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels. I wanted them, so I took them. They are hidden in the ground right in the middle of my tent with the silver underneath.”
