The Lord regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended.

So they say to God, ‘Turn away from us! We do not want to know your ways.

Fearing the Lord is the beginning of moral knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Why, Lord, do you make us stray from your ways, and make our minds stubborn so that we do not obey you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance!

Then the Lord spoke about these people. “They truly love to go astray. They cannot keep from running away from me. So I am not pleased with them. I will now call to mind the wrongs they have done and punish them for their sins.”

They do one act of violence after another, and one deceitful thing after another. They refuse to pay attention to me,” says the Lord.

So the Lord’s anger was kindled against the Israelites, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all that generation that had done wickedly before the Lord was finished.

For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.

This man led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what should not be done.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

However, it was not until the first day of the eleventh month of the fortieth year that Moses addressed the Israelites just as the Lord had instructed him to do.

And against whom was God provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness?
