Do you wish to torment a windblown leaf and chase after dry chaff?

How often are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff swept away by a whirlwind?

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? I groan in prayer, but help seems far away.

May they be like wind-driven chaff, as the Lord’s angel attacks them!

You are my king, O God! Decree Jacob’s deliverance!

In the abundance of your majesty you have overthrown those who rise up against you. You sent forth your wrath; it consumed them like stubble.

Indeed, they are barely planted; yes, they are barely sown; yes, they barely take root in the earth, and then he blows on them, causing them to dry up, and the wind carries them away like straw.

Who stirs up this one from the east? Who officially commissions him for service? He hands nations over to him, and enables him to subdue kings. He makes them like dust with his sword, like windblown straw with his bow.

This is what the sovereign Lord says: The enemy has spoken against you, saying “Aha!” and, “The ancient heights have become our property!”’

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire.”
