Yet he is compassionate. He forgives sin and does not destroy. He often holds back his anger, and does not stir up his fury.

When the angel extended his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented from his judgment. He told the angel who was killing the people, “That’s enough! Stop now!” (Now the Lord’s angel was near the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.)

But the Lord had mercy on them and felt pity for them. He extended his favor to them because of the promise he had made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He has been unwilling to destroy them or remove them from his presence to this very day.

He did evil in the sight of the Lord, just like his father Manasseh had done.

O Lord our God, you answered them. They found you to be a forgiving God, but also one who punished their sinful deeds.

For the sake of my reputation I hold back my anger; for the sake of my prestige I restrain myself from destroying you.
