Psalm 62:10

New English Translation

Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression! Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery! If wealth increases, do not become attached to it!

For he has oppressed the poor and abandoned them; he has seized a house which he did not build.

Such is the lot God allots the wicked, and the heritage of his appointment from God.”

Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away.”

Realize that the Lord shows the godly special favor; the Lord responds when I cry out to him.

They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.

“Look, here is the man who would not make God his protector! He trusted in his great wealth and was confident about his plans to destroy others.”

The Lord says, “Because he is devoted to me, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he is loyal to me.

When you gaze upon riches, they are gone, for they surely make wings for themselves, and fly off into the sky like an eagle!

For you say, “We have made a treaty with death, with Sheol we have made an agreement. When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by it will not reach us. For we have made a lie our refuge, we have hidden ourselves in a deceitful word.”

For this reason this is what the Holy One of Israel says: “You have rejected this message; you trust instead in your ability to oppress and trick, and rely on that kind of behavior.

Look, the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales. He lifts the coastlands as if they were dust.

All the nations are insignificant before him; they are regarded as absolutely nothing.

You were complacent in your evil deeds; you thought, ‘No one sees me.’ Your self-professed wisdom and knowledge lead you astray, when you say, ‘I am unique! No one can compare to me!’

No one is concerned about justice; no one sets forth his case truthfully. They depend on false words and tell lies; they conceive of oppression and give birth to sin.

For I, the Lord, love justice and hate robbery and sin. I will repay them because of my faithfulness; I will make a permanent covenant with them.

This is your fate, the destiny to which I have appointed you, because you have forgotten me and have trusted in false gods.

The person who gathers wealth by unjust means is like the partridge that broods over eggs but does not hatch them. Before his life is half over he will lose his ill-gotten gains. At the end of his life it will be clear he was a fool.”

Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

For the love of money is the root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it have strayed from the faith and stabbed themselves with many pains.

Command those who are rich in this world’s goods not to be haughty or to set their hope on riches, which are uncertain, but on God who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.
