Psalm 57:1

Have mercy on me, O God! Have mercy on me! For in you I have taken shelter. In the shadow of your wings I take shelter until trouble passes.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion; it cannot be upended and will endure forever.

But I trust in your faithfulness. May I rejoice because of your deliverance!

To the Lord I cry out; to the Lord I plead for mercy.

Give sincere homage! Otherwise he will be angry, and you will die because of your behavior, when his anger quickly ignites. How blessed are all who take shelter in him!

How precious is your loyal love, O God! The human race finds shelter under your wings.

Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me.

Do you rulers really pronounce just decisions? Do you judge people fairly?

Deliver me from my enemies, my God! Protect me from those who attack me!

I will be a permanent guest in your home; I will find shelter in the protection of your wings. (Selah)

For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice.

We give thanks to you, O God! We give thanks! You reveal your presence; people tell about your amazing deeds.

Your loyal followers trust in you, for you, Lord, do not abandon those who seek your help.

As for you, the one who lives in the shelter of the sovereign One, and resides in the protective shadow of the mighty king –

He will shelter you with his wings; you will find safety under his wings. His faithfulness is like a shield or a protective wall.

For you have taken refuge in the Lord, my shelter, the sovereign One.

For very soon my fury will subside, and my anger will be directed toward their destruction.”

Go, my people! Enter your inner rooms! Close your doors behind you! Hide for a little while, until his angry judgment is over!

Who among you fears the Lord? Who obeys his servant? Whoever walks in deep darkness, without light, should trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.

And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!

I tell you the solemn truth, you will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy.

I prayed to him: O, Lord God, do not destroy your people, your valued property that you have powerfully redeemed, whom you brought out of Egypt by your strength.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more – or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.”

So I said to him, “My lord, you know the answer.” Then he said to me, “These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb!

May the Lord reward your efforts! May your acts of kindness be repaid fully by the Lord God of Israel, from whom you have sought protection!”

So David left there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father’s family learned about it, they went down there to him.

He came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave. Saul went into it to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave.

David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the Lord said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hand, and you can do to him whatever seems appropriate to you.’” So David got up and quietly cut off an edge of Saul’s robe.

Afterward David got up and went out of the cave. He called out after Saul, “My lord, O king!” When Saul looked behind him, David kneeled down and bowed with his face to the ground.

But David said to Abishai, “Don’t kill him! Who can extend his hand against the Lord’s chosen one and remain guiltless?”
