While he was offering sacrifices, Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s adviser, to come from his city, Giloh. The conspiracy was gaining momentum, and the people were starting to side with Absalom.

All my closest friends detest me; and those whom I love have turned against me.

But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me; you are my glory and the one who restores me.

But it is you, a man like me, my close friend in whom I confided.

They say, “Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over him and get our revenge on him.

All your allies will force you from your homeland! Your treaty partners will deceive you and overpower you. Your trusted friends will set an ambush for you that will take you by surprise!

But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, bring them here and slaughter them in front of me!’”
