Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah)

A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare grips him.

The wicked lay a trap for me, but I do not wander from your precepts.

Arrogant people smear my reputation with lies, but I observe your precepts with all my heart.

The arrogant dig pits to trap me, which violates your law.

Even when my strength leaves me, you watch my footsteps. In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me.

You will free me from the net they hid for me, for you are my place of refuge.

I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me and dug a pit to trap me.

Do not let arrogant men overtake me, or let evil men make me homeless!

Vindicate me, O God! Fight for me against an ungodly nation! Deliver me from deceitful and evil men!

They have prepared a net to trap me; I am discouraged. They have dug a pit for me. They will fall into it! (Selah)

Do not lie in wait like the wicked against the place where the righteous live; do not assault his home.

The one who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his steps.

Then some people said, “Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”

Should good be paid back with evil? Yet they are virtually digging a pit to kill me. Just remember how I stood before you pleading on their behalf to keep you from venting your anger on them.

Let cries of terror be heard in their houses when you send bands of raiders unexpectedly to plunder them. For they have virtually dug a pit to capture me and have hidden traps for me to step into.
