While he was offering sacrifices, Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s adviser, to come from his city, Giloh. The conspiracy was gaining momentum, and the people were starting to side with Absalom.

They attack me, now they surround me; they intend to throw me to the ground.

Many bulls surround me; powerful bulls of Bashan hem me in.

Do not let those who are my enemies for no reason gloat over me! Do not let those who hate me without cause carry out their wicked schemes!

For they do not try to make peace with others, but plan ways to deceive those who are unsuspecting.

I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me and dug a pit to trap me.

Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head. Those who want to destroy me, my enemies for no reason, outnumber me. They make me repay what I did not steal!

They surround me like water all day long; they join forces and encircle me.

(12:1) Ephraim has surrounded me with lies; the house of Israel has surrounded me with deceit. But Judah still roams about with God; he remains faithful to the Holy One.

He went on to say, “Why is my lord chasing his servant? What have I done? What wrong have I done?
