The elders of his house stood over him and tried to lift him from the ground, but he was unwilling, and refused to eat food with them.

Then Ezra got up from in front of the temple of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. While he stayed there, he did not eat food or drink water, for he was in mourning over the infidelity of the exiles.

“I am weary of my life; I will complain without restraint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

My skin has turned dark on me; my body is hot with fever.

so that his life loathes food, and his soul rejects appetizing fare.

I am depressed, so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, from Hermon, from Mount Mizar.

Their insults are painful and make me lose heart; I look for sympathy, but receive none, for comforters, but find none.

I said, “I will remember God while I groan; I will think about him while my strength leaves me.” (Selah)

The grass dries up, the flowers wither, when the wind sent by the Lord blows on them. Surely humanity is like grass.

He shot his arrows into my heart.

I continually think about this, and I am depressed.

For three days he could not see, and he neither ate nor drank anything.
