Take notice of this, you ignorant people! You fools, when will you ever understand?

“How long will you simpletons love naiveté? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?

Laziness brings on a deep sleep, and the idle person will go hungry.

Do not love sleep, lest you become impoverished; open your eyes so that you might be satisfied with food.

Like a door that turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed.

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to relax,

Go to the ant, you sluggard; observe its ways and be wise!

yet it prepares its food in the summer; it gathers at the harvest what it will eat.

The fool folds his hands and does no work, so he has nothing to eat but his own flesh.

“Oh people of Jerusalem, purify your hearts from evil so that you may yet be delivered. How long will you continue to harbor up wicked schemes within you?

A man came, sent from God, whose name was John.

And do this because we know the time, that it is already the hour for us to awake from sleep, for our salvation is now nearer than when we became believers.

For everything made evident is light, and for this reason it says: “Awake, O sleeper! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you!”
