Surely it is futile to spread a net in plain sight of any bird,

Like vinegar to the teeth and like smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him.

The one who is lazy becomes poor, but the one who works diligently becomes wealthy.

The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied.

The way of the sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is like a highway.

The one who is slack in his work is a brother to one who destroys.

Laziness brings on a deep sleep, and the idle person will go hungry.

The sluggard plunges his hand in the dish, and he will not even bring it back to his mouth!

The sluggard will not plow during the planting season, so at harvest time he looks for the crop but has nothing.

What the sluggard desires will kill him, for his hands refuse to work.

The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside! I will be killed in the middle of the streets!”

Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart on the right way.

There are four things on earth that are small, but they are exceedingly wise:

ants are creatures with little strength, but they prepare their food in the summer;

How long, you sluggard, will you lie there? When will you rise from your sleep?

An ox recognizes its owner, a donkey recognizes where its owner puts its food; but Israel does not recognize me, my people do not understand.”

Even the stork knows when it is time to move on. The turtledove, swallow, and crane recognize the normal times for their migration. But my people pay no attention to what I, the Lord, require of them.

But his master answered, ‘Evil and lazy slave! So you knew that I harvest where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter?

Look at the birds in the sky: They do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than they are?

Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord.

so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and perseverance inherit the promises.
