The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

Now a wife of one of the prophets appealed to Elisha for help, saying, “Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the Lord. Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants.”

The one who oppresses the poor insults his Creator, but whoever shows favor to the needy honors him.

A poor person makes supplications, but a rich man answers harshly.

The one who oppresses the poor to increase his own gain and the one who gives to the rich – both end up only in poverty.

Do not exploit a poor person because he is poor and do not crush the needy in court,

Everyone will suffer – the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor.

This is what the Lord says: “Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions – make that four! – I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They sold the innocent for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals.

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan who live on Mount Samaria! You oppress the poor; you crush the needy. You say to your husbands, “Bring us more to drink!”

Listen to this, you who trample the needy, and do away with the destitute in the land.

We’re eager to trade silver for the poor, a pair of sandals for the needy! We want to mix in some chaff with the grain!”

Because he was not able to repay it, the lord ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, children, and whatever he possessed, and repayment to be made.

But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts?

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming on you.

Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.
