Proverbs 17:5

The one who mocks the poor insults his Creator; whoever rejoices over disaster will not go unpunished.

If I have rejoiced over the misfortune of my enemy or exulted because calamity found him –

Certainly zeal for your house consumes me; I endure the insults of those who insult you.

The one who despises his neighbor sins, but whoever is kind to the needy is blessed.

The one who oppresses the poor insults his Creator, but whoever shows favor to the needy honors him.

The Lord abhors every arrogant person; rest assured that they will not go unpunished.

But I have not pestered you to bring disaster. I have not desired the time of irreparable devastation. You know that. You are fully aware of every word that I have spoken.

Say to the Ammonites, ‘Hear the word of the sovereign Lord: This is what the sovereign Lord says: You said “Aha!” about my sanctuary when it was desecrated, about the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and about the house of Judah when they went into exile.

“Because you violently slaughtered your relatives, the people of Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be destroyed forever.

For just as you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink, and they will gulp down; they will be as though they had never been.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

But whoever has the world’s possessions and sees his fellow Christian in need and shuts off his compassion against him, how can the love of God reside in such a person?
