I grieve over you, my brother Jonathan! You were very dear to me. Your love was more special to me than the love of women.

But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the Lord lives and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king is, whether dead or alive, there I will be as well!”

“Don’t imagine that because you are part of the king’s household you will be the one Jew who will escape. If you keep quiet at this time, liberation and protection for the Jews will appear from another source, while you and your father’s household perish. It may very well be that you have achieved royal status for such a time as this!”

A perverse person spreads dissension, and a gossip separates the closest friends.

A person who has friends may be harmed by them, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

A foolish child is the ruin of his father, and a contentious wife is like a constant dripping.

All the relatives of a poor person hate him; how much more do his friends avoid him – he pursues them with words, but they do not respond.

For indeed he who makes holy and those being made holy all have the same origin, and so he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,

But Ruth replied, “Stop urging me to abandon you! For wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live. Your people will become my people, and your God will become my God.

Jonathan made a covenant with David, for he loved him as much as he did his own life.

So Jonathan told David, “My father Saul is trying to kill you. So be careful tomorrow morning. Find a hiding place and stay in seclusion.

I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are. I will speak about you to my father. When I find out what the problem is, I will let you know.”

Jonathan once again took an oath with David, because he loved him. In fact Jonathan loved him as much as he did his own life.

Then Jonathan son of Saul left and went to David at Horesh. He encouraged him through God.
