The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

A wise son accepts his father’s discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.

A wise child brings joy to his father, but a foolish person despises his mother.

Whoever brings a fool into the world does so to his grief, and the father of a fool has no joy.

A foolish child is a grief to his father, and bitterness to the mother who bore him.

A foolish child is the ruin of his father, and a contentious wife is like a constant dripping.

These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of King Hezekiah of Judah copied:

Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, so that I may answer anyone who taunts me.

A rod and reproof impart wisdom, but a child who is unrestrained brings shame to his mother.

Discipline your child, and he will give you rest; he will bring you happiness.

The man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but whoever associates with prostitutes wastes his wealth.

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught knowledge to the people; he carefully evaluated and arranged many proverbs.

Who knows if he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will be master over all the fruit of my labor for which I worked so wisely on earth! This also is futile!
