May he make us submissive, so we can follow all his instructions and obey the commandments, rules, and regulations he commanded our ancestors.

In Judah God moved the people to unite and carry out the edict the king and the officers had issued at the Lord’s command.

In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, in order to fulfill the Lord’s message spoken through Jeremiah, the Lord stirred the mind of King Cyrus of Persia. He disseminated a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom, announcing in a written edict the following:

Then the leaders of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and the Levites – all those whose mind God had stirred – got ready to go up in order to build the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem.

Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, who so moved in the heart of the king to so honor the temple of the Lord which is in Jerusalem!

The king responded, “What is it you are seeking?” Then I quickly prayed to the God of heaven

“Indeed, God does all these things, twice, three times, in his dealings with a person,

Your people willingly follow you when you go into battle. On the holy hills at sunrise the dew of your youth belongs to you.

Give me a desire for your rules, rather than for wealth gained unjustly.

Do not let me have evil desires, or participate in sinful activities with men who behave wickedly. I will not eat their delicacies.

The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like channels of water; he turns it wherever he wants.

O Lord, you make us secure, for even all we have accomplished, you have done for us.

“But I will make a new covenant with the whole nation of Israel after I plant them back in the land,” says the Lord. “I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts and minds. I will be their God and they will be my people.

They will be my people, and I will be their God.

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is well pleased to give you the kingdom.

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people with whom he is pleased!”

John replied, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who hears and learns from the Father comes to me.

So Jesus added, “Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come.”

The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.

For by the grace given to me I say to every one of you not to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think, but to think with sober discernment, as God has distributed to each of you a measure of faith.

even before they were born or had done anything good or bad (so that God’s purpose in election would stand, not by works but by his calling) –

So then, it does not depend on human desire or exertion, but on God who shows mercy.

And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone.

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been in vain. In fact, I worked harder than all of them – yet not I, but the grace of God with me.

Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as if it were coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God,

In Christ we too have been claimed as God’s own possession, since we were predestined according to the one purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will

He did this by predestining us to adoption as his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the pleasure of his will –

He did this when he revealed to us the secret of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ,

For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God;

And in this regard we pray for you always, that our God will make you worthy of his calling and fulfill by his power your every desire for goodness and every work of faith,

He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began,

equip you with every good thing to do his will, working in us what is pleasing before him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
