The angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? Look, I came out to oppose you because what you are doing is perverse before me.

The Lord is good to all, and has compassion on all he has made.

He gives food to the animals, and to the young ravens when they chirp.

Your justice is like the highest mountains, your fairness like the deepest sea; you preserve mankind and the animal kingdom.

The one who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord, but the one who is perverted in his ways despises him.

All a person’s ways seem right in his own opinion, but the Lord evaluates the motives.

The one who walks blamelessly will be delivered, but whoever is perverse in his ways will fall at once.

A poor person who walks in his integrity is better than one who is perverse in his ways even though he is rich.

God came to Balaam that night, and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them; but the word that I will say to you, that you must do.”

Then God’s anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him.

Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?”

The donkey saw me and turned from me these three times. If she had not turned from me, I would have killed you but saved her alive.”

But the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but you may only speak the word that I will speak to you.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

and said, “You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness – will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?

for they did not meet you with food and water on the way as you came from Egypt, and furthermore, they hired Balaam son of Beor of Pethor in Aram Naharaim to curse you.

You must not muzzle your ox when it is treading grain.
