Numbers 17:10

The Lord said to Moses, “Bring Aaron’s staff back before the testimony to be preserved for a sign to the rebels, so that you may bring their murmurings to an end before me, that they will not die.”

I am surrounded by lions; I lie down among those who want to devour me; men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are a sharp sword.

Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it to be kept for generations to come, so that they may see the food I fed you in the desert when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.’”

Just as the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the Testimony for safekeeping.

Listen, O heavens, pay attention, O earth! For the Lord speaks: “I raised children, I brought them up, but they have rebelled against me!

O Israel, you have sinned since the time of Gibeah, and there you have remained. Did not war overtake the evildoers in Gibeah?

Then Moses and Aaron fell down with their faces to the ground before the whole assembled community of the Israelites.

“Separate yourselves from among this community, that I may consume them in an instant.”

As for the censers of these men who sinned at the cost of their lives, they must be made into hammered sheets for covering the altar, because they presented them before the Lord and sanctified them. They will become a sign to the Israelites.”

It was a memorial for the Israelites, that no outsider who is not a descendant of Aaron should approach to burn incense before the Lord, that he might not become like Korah and his company – just as the Lord had spoken by the authority of Moses.

So Moses did as the Lord commanded him – this is what he did.

You must place them in the tent of meeting before the ark of the covenant where I meet with you.

So Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each man took his staff.

So Moses took the staff from before the Lord, just as he commanded him.

“Do not allow the tribe of the families of the Kohathites to be cut off from among the Levites;

And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.

Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.

You have been rebelling against him from the very first day I knew you!

Remember – don’t ever forget – how you provoked the Lord your God in the desert; from the time you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place you were constantly rebelling against him.

It contained the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered entirely with gold. In this ark were the golden urn containing the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.

The sons of Eli were wicked men. They did not recognize the Lord’s authority.

But all the evil and worthless men among those who had gone with David said, “Since they didn’t go with us, we won’t give them any of the loot we retrieved! They may take only their wives and children. Let them lead them away and be gone!”
