And Moses said to the Lord, “Why have you afflicted your servant? Why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of this entire people on me?

I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn me; tell me why you are contending with me.’

If you, O Lord, were to keep track of sins, O Lord, who could stand before you?

Do not sit in judgment on your servant, for no one alive is innocent before you.

Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What will I do with this people? – a little more and they will stone me!”

Moses returned to the Lord, and said, “Lord, why have you caused trouble for this people? Why did you ever send me?

I said, “Oh, mother, how I regret that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.”

Why must I continually suffer such painful anguish? Why must I endure the sting of their insults like an incurable wound? Will you let me down when I need you like a brook one goes to for water, but that cannot be relied on?”

You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord who rules over all?

Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and when the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly, Moses was also displeased.

But if you are going to deal with me like this, then kill me immediately. If I have found favor in your sight then do not let me see my trouble.”

Apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxious concern for all the churches.

But how can I alone bear up under the burden of your hardship and strife?
