In the dark the robber breaks into houses, but by day they shut themselves in; they do not know the light.

“If I have put my confidence in gold or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security!’

Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away.”

Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression! Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery! If wealth increases, do not become attached to it!

“If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there will be no blood guilt for him.

Wealth does not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from mortal danger.

How much better it is to acquire wisdom than gold; to acquire understanding is more desirable than silver.

For to the one who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy, but to the sinner, he gives the task of amassing wealth – only to give it to the one who pleases God. This task of the wicked is futile – like chasing the wind!

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s angry judgment. The whole earth will be consumed by his fiery wrath. Indeed, he will bring terrifying destruction on all who live on the earth.”

Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.

So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God.”

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide yourselves purses that do not wear out – a treasure in heaven that never decreases, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.

But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

When Jesus noticed this, he said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!

Command those who are rich in this world’s goods not to be haughty or to set their hope on riches, which are uncertain, but on God who richly provides us with all things for our enjoyment.

Your conduct must be free from the love of money and you must be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.”
