In his pain Manasseh asked the Lord his God for mercy and truly humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.

The Annals of the Prophets include his prayer, give an account of how the Lord responded to it, record all his sins and unfaithful acts, and identify the sites where he built high places and erected Asherah poles and idols before he humbled himself.

Give sincere homage! Otherwise he will be angry, and you will die because of your behavior, when his anger quickly ignites. How blessed are all who take shelter in him!

The Lord is near the brokenhearted; he delivers those who are discouraged.

How blessed is the one who treats the poor properly! When trouble comes, the Lord delivers him.

The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit – O God, a humble and repentant heart you will not reject.

O Lord who rules over all, how blessed are those who trust in you!

It is better to be lowly in spirit with the afflicted than to share the spoils with the proud.

A person’s pride will bring him low, but one who has a lowly spirit will gain honor.

“So now, children, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways.

For this reason the Lord is ready to show you mercy; he sits on his throne, ready to have compassion on you. Indeed, the Lord is a just God; all who wait for him in faith will be blessed.

For this is what the high and exalted one says, the one who rules forever, whose name is holy: “I dwell in an exalted and holy place, but also with the discouraged and humiliated, in order to cheer up the humiliated and to encourage the discouraged.

The spirit of the sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has chosen me. He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the brokenhearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners,

My hand made them; that is how they came to be,” says the Lord. I show special favor to the humble and contrite, who respect what I have to say.

He has told you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord really wants from you: He wants you to promote justice, to be faithful, and to live obediently before your God.

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children.

Blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”

“But your eyes are blessed because they see, and your ears because they hear.

But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Blessed is that slave whom the master finds at work when he comes.

Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

I tell you, many will come from the east and west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,

But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

But he replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”

I tell you that this man went down to his home justified rather than the Pharisee. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Thus I grant to you a kingdom, just as my Father granted to me,

that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,

Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are the people who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.

But the rich person’s pride should be in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a wildflower in the meadow.

Happy is the one who endures testing, because when he has proven to be genuine, he will receive the crown of life that God promised to those who love him.

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! Did not God choose the poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?

Then the angel said to me, “Write the following: Blessed are those who are invited to the banquet at the wedding celebration of the Lamb!” He also said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can have access to the tree of life and can enter into the city by the gates.

Because you say, “I am rich and have acquired great wealth, and need nothing,” but do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked,
