Now they were all wailing and mourning for her, but he said, “Stop your weeping; she is not dead but asleep.”

Then she died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

(19:1) The king then became very upset. He went up to the upper room over the gate and wept. As he went he said, “My son, Absalom! My son, my son, Absalom! If only I could have died in your place! Absalom, my son, my son!”

Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in plain view of the people.

“I will pour out on the kingship of David and the population of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication so that they will look to me, the one they have pierced. They will lament for him as one laments for an only son, and there will be a bitter cry for him like the bitter cry for a firstborn.

‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, yet you did not weep.’

A great number of the people followed him, among them women who were mourning and wailing for him.

And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts.

Now when he came to the house, Jesus did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child’s father and mother.

And they began making fun of him, because they knew that she was dead.

When Jesus heard this, he said, “This sickness will not lead to death, but to God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
