“Beware of the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes, and they love elaborate greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

A person’s pride will bring him low, but one who has a lowly spirit will gain honor.

“Watch out,” Jesus said to them, “beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,

And Jesus ordered them, “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”

Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seats in the synagogues and elaborate greetings in the marketplaces!

Meanwhile, when many thousands of the crowd had gathered so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Then when Jesus noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. He said to them,

They devour widows’ property, and as a show make long prayers. They will receive a more severe punishment.”

Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another.

You be on guard against him too, because he vehemently opposed our words.

I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not acknowledge us.
