I offered my back to those who attacked, my jaws to those who tore out my beard; I did not hide my face from insults and spitting.

(just as many were horrified by the sight of you) he was so disfigured he no longer looked like a man;

Then some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying, “Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.

Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

They will flog him severely and kill him. Yet on the third day he will rise again.”

Then the whole group of them rose up and brought Jesus before Pilate.

Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, dressing him in elegant clothes, Herod sent him back to Pilate.

The people also stood there watching, but the rulers ridiculed him, saying, “He saved others. Let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, his chosen one!”

When Jesus had said this, one of the high priest’s officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said, “Is that the way you answer the high priest?”

Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s residence. (Now it was very early morning.) They did not go into the governor’s residence so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal.

They replied, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”

(This happened to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated what kind of death he was going to die.)

Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and your chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”

this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our forefathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate after he had decided to release him.
