“‘If anyone curses his father and mother he must be put to death. He has cursed his father and mother; his blood guilt is on himself.

David said to him, “Your blood be on your own head! Your own mouth has testified against you, saying ‘I have put the Lord’s anointed to death.’”

May the Lord punish him for the blood he shed; behind my father David’s back he struck down and murdered with the sword two men who were more innocent and morally upright than he – Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.

For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’

In reply all the people said, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”

For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’

‘Cursed is the one who disrespects his father and mother.’ Then all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

Anyone who leaves your house will be responsible for his own death – we are innocent in that case! But if anyone with you in the house is harmed, we will be responsible.

He did this so the violent deaths of Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons might be avenged and Abimelech, their half-brother who murdered them, might have to pay for their spilled blood, along with the leaders of Shechem who helped him murder them.
