The elders of Daughter Zion sit on the ground in silence. They have thrown dirt on their heads; They have dressed in sackcloth. Jerusalem’s young women stare down at the ground. כ (Kaf)

Then Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe she was wearing. She put her hands on her head and went on her way, wailing as she went.

In their streets they wear sackcloth; on their roofs and in their town squares all of them wail, they fall down weeping.

A putrid stench will replace the smell of spices, a rope will replace a belt, baldness will replace braided locks of hair, a sackcloth garment will replace a fine robe, and a prisoner’s brand will replace beauty.

Her gates will mourn and lament; deprived of her people, she will sit on the ground.

The roads to Zion mourn because no one travels to the festivals. All her city gates are deserted; her priests groan. Her virgins grieve; she is in bitter anguish! ה (He)

Let a person sit alone in silence, when the Lord is disciplining him.

The Lord himself has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. They did not honor the priests; they did not show favor to the elders. ע (Ayin)

Those who once feasted on delicacies are now starving to death in the streets. Those who grew up wearing expensive clothes are now dying amid garbage. ו (Vav)

Princes were hung by their hands; elders were mistreated.

The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped playing their music.

They will lament loudly over you and cry bitterly. They will throw dust on their heads and roll in the ashes;

they will tear out their hair because of you and put on sackcloth, and they will weep bitterly over you with intense mourning.

They will wear sackcloth, terror will cover them; shame will be on all their faces, and all of their heads will be shaved bald.

Wail like a young virgin clothed in sackcloth, lamenting the death of her husband-to-be.

For this reason whoever is smart keeps quiet in such a time, for it is an evil time.

In that day your beautiful young women and your young men will faint from thirst.

The women singing in the temple will wail in that day.” The sovereign Lord is speaking. “There will be many corpses littered everywhere! Be quiet!”

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat on ashes.

And they threw dust on their heads and were shouting with weeping and mourning, “Woe, Woe, O great city – in which all those who had ships on the sea got rich from her wealth – because in a single hour she has been destroyed!”
