Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus began complaining about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,”

But the Pharisees and the experts in the law were complaining, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

And when the people saw it, they all complained, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”

But the Pharisees and their experts in the law complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Jesus replied, “Do not complain about me to one another.

This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread your ancestors ate, but then later died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.”

Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said, “This is a difficult saying! Who can understand it?”

After this many of his disciples quit following him and did not accompany him any longer.

There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying, “He is a good man,” but others, “He deceives the common people.”

And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.

These people are grumblers and fault-finders who go wherever their desires lead them, and they give bombastic speeches, enchanting folks for their own gain.
