He himself was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

He confessed – he did not deny but confessed – “I am not the Christ!”

The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but rather, ‘I have been sent before him.’

Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”
