John 1:43

New English Translation

On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

“I made myself available to those who did not ask for me; I appeared to those who did not look for me. I said, ‘Here I am! Here I am!’ to a nation that did not invoke my name.

Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;

Now when Jesus heard that John had been imprisoned, he went into Galilee.

But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth. “Follow me,” he said to him. And he got up and followed him.

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

These things happened in Bethany across the Jordan River where John was baptizing.

On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples.

When John’s two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

(Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.)

So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be content.”

Jesus did this as the first of his miraculous signs, in Cana of Galilee. In this way he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

Then Jesus, when he looked up and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread so that these people may eat?”

Philip replied, “Two hundred silver coins worth of bread would not be enough for them, for each one to get a little.”

Not that I have already attained this – that is, I have not already been perfected – but I strive to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus also laid hold of me.

We love because he loved us first.
