Jacob said to Pharaoh, “All the years of my travels are 130. All the years of my life have been few and painful; the years of my travels are not as long as those of my ancestors.”

For we are resident foreigners and nomads in your presence, like all our ancestors; our days are like a shadow on the earth, without security.

King Rehoboam consulted with the older advisers who had served his father Solomon when he had been alive. He asked them, “How do you advise me to answer these people?”

“Man, born of woman, lives but a few days, and they are full of trouble.

He grows up like a flower and then withers away; he flees like a shadow, and does not remain.

I said to myself, ‘Age should speak, and length of years should make wisdom known.’

My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and they come to an end without hope.

Will they not instruct you and speak to you, and bring forth words from their understanding?

My days are coming to an end, and I am withered like grass.

But you, O Lord, rule forever, and your reputation endures.

People are like a vapor, their days like a shadow that disappears.

Look, you make my days short-lived, and my life span is nothing from your perspective. Surely all people, even those who seem secure, are nothing but vapor.

They neither know nor understand. They stumble around in the dark, while all the foundations of the earth crumble.

Yes, in your eyes a thousand years are like yesterday that quickly passes, or like one of the divisions of the nighttime.
