Please recall the word you commanded your servant Moses: ‘If you act unfaithfully, I will scatter you among the nations.

Are not my days few? Cease, then, and leave me alone, that I may find a little comfort,

Remember that you have made me as with the clay; will you return me to dust?

I loathe it; I do not want to live forever; leave me alone, for my days are a vapor!

“My days are swifter than a runner, they speed by without seeing happiness.

Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away.”

Many say, “Who can show us anything good?” Smile upon us, Lord!

Remember how the enemy hurls insults, O Lord, and how a foolish nation blasphemes your name!

Rise up, O God! Defend your honor! Remember how fools insult you all day long!

He remembered that they were made of flesh, and were like a wind that blows past and does not return.

Take note of my brief lifespan! Why do you make all people so mortal?

Take note, O Lord, of the way your servants are taunted, and of how I must bear so many insults from people!

I said, “Lord, you know how I suffer. Take thought of me and care for me. Pay back for me those who have been persecuting me. Do not be so patient with them that you allow them to kill me. Be mindful of how I have put up with their insults for your sake.

You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes.
