It is higher than the heavens – what can you do? It is deeper than Sheol – what can you know?

Destruction and Death say, ‘With our ears we have heard a rumor about where it can be found.’

For now I would be lying down and would be quiet, I would be asleep and then at peace

For it is a fire that devours even to Destruction, and it would uproot all my harvest.

Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of deepest darkness?

(Who has confronted me that I should repay? Everything under heaven belongs to me!)

He who removes mountains suddenly, who overturns them in his anger;

If I were to say, “Certainly the darkness will cover me, and the light will turn to night all around me,”

If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there. If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be.

Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and give you thanks? (Selah)

Death and Destruction are before the Lord – how much more the hearts of humans!

As Death and Destruction are never satisfied, so the eyes of a person are never satisfied.

Sheol below is stirred up about you, ready to meet you when you arrive. It rouses the spirits of the dead for you, all the former leaders of the earth; it makes all the former kings of the nations rise from their thrones.

he reveals deep and hidden things. He knows what is in the darkness, and light resides with him.

Even if they could dig down into the netherworld, my hand would pull them up from there. Even if they could climb up to heaven, I would drag them down from there.

And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

They have as king over them the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.
