If only you would keep completely silent! For you, that would be wisdom.

Upright men are appalled at this; the innocent man is troubled with the godless.

But when they gazed intently from a distance but did not recognize him, they began to weep loudly. Each of them tore his robes, and they threw dust into the air over their heads.

“Indeed, I am completely unworthy – how could I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth to silence myself.

I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done.

If you have done foolishly by exalting yourself or if you have planned evil, put your hand over your mouth!

his form was so marred he no longer looked human – so now he will startle many nations. Kings will be shocked by his exaltation, for they will witness something unannounced to them, and they will understand something they had not heard about.

For this reason whoever is smart keeps quiet in such a time, for it is an evil time.

Nations will see this and be disappointed by all their strength, they will put their hands over their mouths, and act as if they were deaf.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how fathomless his ways!

They said to him, “Shut up! Put your hand over your mouth and come with us! You can be our adviser and priest. Wouldn’t it be better to be a priest for a whole Israelite tribe than for just one man’s family?”
